    Staff Change

There There was a change in staff at the Halifax office of the AMC in July. Robert Nathan, who has worked with the AMC for the past year as Coordinator and Communications Officer, has moved back to his home city of Victoria, BC. Gloria Brazeau-Schiebel has joined AMC in Robert's place and in so doing is coming home also. She has had a good deal of executive experience in the non-profit area especially in community development. She has a broad knowledge of immigration issues, having lived in Japan for eight years and then engaged in New Brunswick's efforts in immigration. She genuinely wants to play her part in the AMC and is excited that the research engendered by AMC will lead to the development of policies that will build a better future for all Atlantic Canadians.

    Research Domains

Dr. Chris Murphy has moved on from his position as domain leader of the Justice, Policing, and Security domain. The domain will now be co-led by Jean-Franois Thibault from the Université de Moncton and a representative of Dalhousie University who has yet to be determined.

Dr. Ibrahim Ouattara is no longer co-domain leader of the Citizenship and Social, Cultural, and Civic integration domain. Dr. Pauline Gardiner Barber from Dalhousie is now the sole leader of this domain.

Integrating International Medical Graduates: Nova Scotia Resources & Gaps
    By Suha Masalmeh, MD, MHA

International Medical Graduates [IMGs] comprise approximately 25% of the physician workforce in Canada. Despite the demand for physicians, IMGs face numerous challenges in accreditation and participation in the medical workforce in Canada. This paper aims to analyze and synthesize information on the resources and gaps in the IMG licensing process in Nova Scotia and provide recommendations to facilitate their integration into the medical system as licensed physicians. It is based on a critical analysis of information collected from literature, internet sources and key informant interviews.

Alexandra Dobrowolsky, Saint Mary's University / Atlantic Metropolis Centre (Canada) adobrowolsky@smu.ca
Pauline Gardiner-Barber, Dalhousie University / Atlantic Metropolis Centre (Canada) pgbarber@dal.ca

In the current economic downturn, and over recent decades, labour market realities have become over-arching concerns for immigration policy around the world. While acknowledging that economic vitality and productivity are crucial, this workshop evaluates what issues, interests, and identities can become marginalised when the market and economic rationales are prioritised. Specifically, what are the concrete effects of marketisation on families, women, and children? And, what are the gendered effects of marketisation for immigration, and, ultimately, for citizenship?
