    11th National Metropolis Conference: Frontiers of Canadian Immigration

    March 19-22, 2009, Hyatt Regency Calgary & Telus Convention Centre, Calgary Alberta

    Over a century ago, immigrants to the Prairies realized their dream of making a home in the great frontier. By continuing to attract people from around the world, Canada is realizing a national dream of being an equitable, diverse and innovative society. There are now new frontiers to explore and new challenges to overcome. Migrants are arriving from non-traditional source countries, representing a vast range of linguistic, ethnic and religious diversity. The strong economy in Canada in general and in the Prairies in particular has brought an increasing number of temporary foreign workers. Smaller communities - including rural and francophone minority communities - are now experiencing unprecedented growth through immigration.

    The new trends in migration call for renewed thinking about local, regional and national policies for immigration and integration. The 11th National Metropolis Conference, March 19-22, 2009 in Calgary—a city poised to become one of Canada’s major immigrant-receiving cities—will bring together researchers, policy-makers and community practitioners to explore the frontiers of research and practice in six policy priority areas:

    1. Citizenship and Social, Cultural and Civic Integration;
    2. Economic and Labour Market Integration;
    3. Family, Children and Youth;
    4. Housing and Neighbourhoods;
    5. Policing, Security and Justice;
    6. Welcoming Communities: The Role of the Host Communities in Attracting, Integrating and Retaining Newcomers and Minorities.

    Recognizing the growing interconnectedness of the local with the national and the global, the conference is a good opportunity for participants to develop a better understanding of immigration and diversity in the Prairies—and how this will build a better future for Canada.

    Integration Futures Conference

    Prato, Italy, October 22 – 24, 2008

    The past decade has seen a shift in policies and discourse on immigrant integration. From the earlier emphasis on settlement services and employment, the new focus of integration in many countries seems to be the preservation of social cohesion, a mainstream national identity and culture, and mainstream core values. In a forward-looking manner, Integration Futures will explore several aspects of this theme, including:

    • the impact of immigration and citizenship policies on integration
    • the relationship between between integration and multiculturalism policies
    • the integration of the second generation: education, labour market and other outcomes
    • political integration – the ultimate indicator?
    • globalisation, transnationalism and integration, and
    • religion, secularism, and integration

    Registration is now open. The deadline to avail early bird rates is September 1st. Please visit www.integrationfutures.com for the conference program, registration and other details.

    SECOND ANNUAL METROPOLIS NATIONAL RESEARCH COMPETITION

    June 10, 2008

    The Metropolis Project is pleased to announce its second annual national research competition. This year, the research question is: How has large-scale immigration transformed Canada's society and economy? Previous work undertaken within the Metropolis Project has largely focused on the immigration experience, well-being, and outcomes for newcomers, but less attention has been devoted to the way immigration has been influencing, benefiting, and challenging Canadian society, the economy, and native-born Canadians. An appropriate evaluation of the costs and benefits of an immigration policy requires accounting for all citizens affected by migration, including non-migrants.

    The maximum value of this research grant is $125,000 for 12 to 18 months. Researchers affiliated with Canadian postsecondary educational institutions are invited to submit a proposal by September 30, 2008.

    For more information on the competition and how to apply, please see http://www.sshrc.ca/web/apply/program_descriptions/metropolis_e.asp.
