11ème Conférence Nationale Metropolis: Aux confins de la migration canadienne
du 19 au 22 Mars 2009, Hyatt Regency Calgary et Telus Convention Centre, Calgary Alberta
Il y a plus de cent ans, les immigrants se dirigeant vers les Prairies ont réalisé leur rêve en
s’installant sur les vastes étendues de terres à l’intérieur du pays. Aujourd’hui, le Canada, qui continue d’attirer des populations
des quatre coins du monde, réalise un rêve national, celui de créer une société
équitable, diversifiée et novatrice. Il y a maintenant de nouvelles frontières à explorer et de
nouveaux défis à surmonter. Les migrants arrivent de pays sources non traditionnels et représentent
une importante diversité linguistique, ethnique et religieuse. La forte économie du Canada en
général, particulièrement celle des Prairies, a généré un afflux croissant de travailleurs étrangers temporaires.
De plus petites collectivités – dont les collectivités rurales et celles où les francophones sont en situation
minoritaire – enregistrent maintenant une croissance sans pareil en raison de l’immigration.
Les nouvelles tendances de l’immigration exigent que soient repensées les politiques locales, régionales
et nationales d’immigration et d’intégration. La Onzième conférence nationale Metropolis,
qui se tiendra du 19 au 22 mars 2009 à Calgary, ville qui devrait devenir l’un des principaux pôles d’attraction
pour les immigrants au Canada —, réunira des chercheurs, des décideurs et des intervenants communautaires
afin d’explorer les confins de la recherche et des pratiques dans six domaines de priorité :
- La citoyenneté et l’intégration sociale, culturelle et civile;
- L’intégration à l’économie et au marché du travail;
- La famille, les enfants et les jeunes;
- Le logement et les voisinages;
- La justice, les services de police et la sécurité;
- Les collectivités d’accueil et leur rôle dans l’attrait, l’intégration et la rétention des nouveaux arrivants et des minorités.
En reconnaissant l’interdépendance grandissante entre les acteurs locaux, nationaux et mondiaux,
la conférence représente une belle occasion pour les participants d’accroître leur
compréhension de l’immigration et de la diversité dans les Prairies, et de la
manière dont le Canada en bénéficiera.

This year’s APPSA conference, hosted by the Department of Political Science, Saint Mary’s University, will explore Democracy’s Shifting Shorelines:

commemorating the 250th anniversary of representative democracy in Nova Scotia. It will be co-sponsored by the Democracy 250 Committee
of the Nova Scotia legislature and will provide an academic setting to reflect on the past, present and future of the democratic adventure.

This journal issue aims to provide a space to reflect critically on the issues related to Canadian multiculturalism for the last two decades in
specifically feminist terms. We invite artists, poets, researchers, scholars and activists to contribute submissions in French or in English.
Possible topics include:
- ulticulturalism and sexual diversity
- multiculturalism, colonial discourses and decolonization
- Indigenous peoples, self-determination, and official multiculturalism
- discourses surrounding immigration and their relationship to lived experiences and material realities (e.g., labour and employment,
racism, state violence, etc.)

- first generation, second generation, and 1.5-generation experiences of cultural and social “integration”

Sookmyung Institute for Multicultural Studies invites manuscripts for the inaugural issue of OMNES: Journal of Migration and
Society to be published biannually from 2009. OMNES welcomes submissions from academics and professionals in the fields of the
humanities, social sciences, business, arts and education. The scope of the journal covers themes such as the global movement
of people, human security related to migration, multicultural societies, identity, nationalism, citizenship, ethnicity,
diversity, social conflict and cohesion, and relevant topics. Deadline for submission is November 30th, 2008. If you wish to

TRANSFORMING BOUNDARIES
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 15 October 2008
The conference invites papers that fall within the broad theme of the conference (boundaries) and forced migration more
generally. We particularly encourage proposals of organized panels. We solicit proposals that touch on the following sub-themes
of the conference:
- Transforming the Boundaries of Identity
- Transforming the Boundaries of Community
- Transforming the Boundaries of Policy Areas.
SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS
We invite submissions of abstracts of 250 words from academics, graduate students, practitioners, policy makers, individuals
working with forced migrants and forced migrants themselves. Submissions from all disciplines are welcome. We wish to
encourage practice-based presentations and other non-traditional means of exploring forced migration and its study,
including film screenings, installations, and exhibitions.
Submissions may be of two types:
(i) individual paper presentations,
(ii) proposals to organize a panel of up to four individuals on a particular theme or topic,
(iii) work-in-progress papers.

Integration Futures Conference

The past decade has seen a shift in policies and discourse on immigrant integration. From the earlier emphasis on settlement
services and employment, the new focus of integration in many countries seems to be the preservation of social cohesion, a
mainstream national identity and culture, and mainstream core values. In a forward-looking manner, Integration Futures will
explore several aspects of this theme, including:
- the impact of immigration and citizenship policies on integration
- the relationship between between integration and multiculturalism policies
- the integration of the second generation: education, labour market and other outcomes
- political integration – the ultimate indicator?
- globalisation, transnationalism and integration, and
- religion, secularism, and integration

SECOND ANNUAL METROPOLIS NATIONAL RESEARCH COMPETITION
June 10, 2008
The Metropolis Project is pleased to announce its second annual national research competition. This year, the research question
is: How has large-scale immigration transformed Canada's society and economy? Previous work undertaken within the Metropolis
Project has largely focused on the immigration experience, well-being, and outcomes for newcomers, but less attention has been
devoted to the way immigration has been influencing, benefiting, and challenging Canadian society, the economy, and native-born
Canadians. An appropriate evaluation of the costs and benefits of an immigration policy requires accounting for all citizens
affected by migration, including non-migrants.
The maximum value of this research grant is $125,000 for 12 to 18 months. Researchers affiliated with Canadian postsecondary
educational institutions are invited to submit a proposal by September 30, 2008.

Tenure-stream Position in Force Migration and Globalization Available – York University

Applications are invited for a tenure-stream position at the Assistant Professor level in Forced Migration and
Globalization Studies: Theory and Critical Policy Studies, to start July 1, 2009. The successful candidate will
be expected to contribute to the work of the Centre for Refugee Studies (CRS), an organized research unit of York University.
We are seeking a dynamic scholar with experience working at the interface of avant-garde research and critical theorizing,
and with the ability to translate this into policy-relevant discussions and recommendations in the fields of forced
migration/refugee issues and globalization. Established international and national networks with scholars and policy-makers
are an asset. We expect this scholar to participate in our new Canadian refugee policy network, and build our research and
teaching capacity on the externalization of asylum and protracted refugee situations. Candidates are expected to have a PhD
in a social science discipline with a record of external funding and publications in the fields of forced migration/refugee
studies and critical policy studies, preferably at the international and national levels. The successful candidate must be
suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Dalhousie University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-stream
position in Sociology at the Lecturer/Assistant Professor level, effective July 1, 2009.
The Department seeks a sociologist with special expertise in quantitative research methods and a program of research in the
department’s substantive areas of Social Justice and Inequality or Economy, Work and Development. Applicants should be
knowledgeable about existing datasets and be able to use quantitative analysis to explore academic or policy arguments. In
addition to sociology courses in their substantive area of interest the candidate will be expected to do some administrative
committee work and teach some of the department’s research methods and statistics courses in both the undergraduate
and graduate program.
Applicants should already possess or have met all the requirements for a Ph.D. in Sociology and have some experience in
